Your Questions, answered

Everything you need to know about vintage rings, custom designs, lab-grown diamonds, and everything in between.

Visiting the shop

Where are you located, and when are you open?

We're at 2418 Fillmore Street, in San Francisco. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 12pm to 5pm. Walk-ins welcome — pop in to browse, try things on, talk custom, or get an offer on a piece you own.

Do I need an appointment?

For shopping, custom design chats, or nerding out about a piece — no, just walk in. For selling or trading in jewelry, it depends — if you have a large collection, please book an appointment so we can give you focused time, and you're not waiting while we ring someone up.

What should I expect from a visit?

Lots of jewels, zero pressure, and probably more jewelry history infodumping than you bargained for. Whether you're ring shopping, curious about something you inherited, or just window-shopping on lunch break — we're glad to help.

Vintage & estate jewelry

What's the difference between vintage, antique, and estate jewelry?

Antique technically means 100+ years old — Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, early Art Deco. Vintage usually means 20–100 years old — think mid-century, retro, 1970s, 1980s. Estate is the catch-all for previously owned pieces, regardless of age. We carry all of the above.

Are your estate and vintage pieces authentic?

Yes. Every piece in our case is examined, tested, and (when needed) repaired by our GIA-trained founders with over 20 years of experience. Our buyers are industry experts in jewelry history, colored stones, and vintage designer jewelry.

Do you have Art Deco, Victorian, or Edwardian pieces in stock?

Probably! Our inventory changes constantly, and we usually have many pieces that haven't been photographed yet. If you're hunting for a specific era, stone, or style, message us on WhatsApp at wa.me/14159617867 and we'll tell you what's in stock or coming in.

Why buy vintage instead of new?

Better craftsmanship (often), a smaller environmental footprint, design details that just aren't made anymore, and the magic of wearing something with a past. Plus, we say this with love, you won't show up to brunch wearing the same ring as five other people.

Custom & engagement rings

Do you make custom engagement rings?

Yes — it's a big part of what we do. We design custom engagement rings with lab-grown diamonds, natural diamonds, and reclaimed colored stones. Whether you want to redesign an heirloom, build something around a stone you already own, or start from a Pinterest board, we'll walk you through it.

Do you do custom lab-grown diamond engagement rings?

Yes, we specialize in lab diamonds, especially antique-cut lab diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds let you get a bigger, cleaner stone for your budget without compromising. If you’re not sure whether to choose lab or natural, we’ll help walk you through it..

How does the custom design process work?

Here's how it goes, start to finish:

  1. Consultation — Walk in, message us on WhatsApp, or email. We talk inspiration, budget, stones, timeline.
  2. Quote & design — We send you a quote and start designing. Includes up to two CAD renderings.
  3. CAD approval & deposit — Once you sign off on the design, we collect a 50% non-refundable deposit. The remaining 50% is due on delivery.
  4. Production — Your piece is made in your chosen materials.
  5. Pickup or shipping — We let you know the moment it's ready.
How long does a custom engagement ring take?

Typically 6–8 weeks from CAD approval to delivery, depending on complexity and stone sourcing. If your wedding or proposal is closer than that, let us know. If it's still 4+ weeks out, we can usually make it work.

How much does a custom engagement ring cost?

It depends on the stone and the setting, but we work across a wide range. We quote everything upfront before any deposit. Custom engagement rings start around $3,000. Lab diamond engagement rings typically cost under $10,000. Natural stone prices vary depending on origin, treatment, color, clarity, size, etc., but we will find you the best stone for your budget.

Can I use a stone I already have?

Yes! Heirloom stones, inherited diamonds, gemstones from a piece you no longer wear. Bring it in or ship it insured, and we'll design something that gives it new life.

Can I make changes after approving the CAD design?

Once you’ve approved the final CAD and the piece is in production, we typically can’t make any changes. The only exception is changing the ring size. Take your time during the design phase, ask every question, and only approve when you're sure.

Is my deposit refundable?

The 50% deposit is non-refundable once design work begins. It covers our designers' time, stone sourcing, and CAD work. If you cancel after that, the deposit stays with us, but we'll always communicate clearly before anything moves forward.

Can I return or exchange a custom piece?

Custom pieces are final sale as they were made for you and only you. That's why we spend so much time in the design phase making sure everything is exactly right before we go into production.

Does my custom piece come with a warranty?

Yes! Every custom Mureta & Co. piece comes with 12 months of complimentary repairs for normal wear and production defects. Damage from misuse, loss, or work done by another jeweler isn't covered.

Lab-grown diamonds

Do you sell lab-grown diamonds?

Yes. We use lab-grown diamonds in custom engagement rings, made-to-order pieces, and select in-stock designs. We specialize in antique-cut lab-grown diamonds.

What color and clarity are your lab-grown diamonds?

Every lab-grown diamond we use is at least G color and at least VS2 clarity. We can source warmer colors upon request.

Are your lab-grown diamonds certified?

Lab-grown diamonds over 3 carats come with IGI certification. Bracelets, necklaces, and multi-stone rings aren't individually certified, but we guarantee their authenticity.

Lab-grown vs. natural diamonds — which should I choose?

It depends on what you want. Lab-grown diamonds are visually and chemically identical to natural diamonds, but come at a dramatically lower price point, which can give your budget more freedom for design (or justify the honeymoon of your dreams). Natural diamonds carry the romance of geological history and have higher resale value. We’re happy to talk you through the pros and cons.

Selling & trade-ins

Do you buy jewelry?

That is our expertise! We buy vintage and antique pieces (Georgian through 1990s), designer jewelry (Cartier, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co., and others), fine untreated colored stones, and pieces in platinum, 14k/18k gold, and sterling silver.

How do I sell a piece to you?

Send photos and any documentation (appraisals, receipts, lab certs) to hello@muretaandco.com or WhatsApp wa.me/14159617867. If we're interested, we'll book you for an in-person evaluation. Bring ID and any paperwork; we'll examine and test the piece, then make you an offer. Offers are valid for one week and paid by check or ACH/wire.

Can I trade in a piece toward something new?

Yes, you can apply the value of anything we'd buy toward a purchase or store credit. Tell us what you're hoping to find next, and we'll work something out.

Appraisals

Do you offer appraisals?

At this time, we do not write formal written appraisals for insurance. But we will give you a free expert read on value, history, and authenticity. Walk in or email us photos at hello@muretaandco.com.

Where can I get a written appraisal?

We can refer you to trusted local appraisers in the Bay Area and sometimes nationally.

Repairs & resizing

Do you offer complimentary repairs?

Yes. Anything purchased from us within the last 6 months is repaired free.

What happens if my item is older than 6 months?

Repairs after 6 months may have a fee, depending on what's needed. We always quote upfront and get your approval before we touch the piece.

Do you repair pieces I didn't buy from you?

No, we only repair pieces that were purchased from us.

How long do repairs take?

Up to 4 weeks, depending on the work. We'll keep you posted along the way.

How do I start a repair request?

Message us on WhatsApp at wa.me/14159617867 or email hello@muretaandco.com with your order details (if applicable) and a quick description of the issue. We'll take it from there.

Will my jewelry look the same after repair?

Our jewelers restore as close to original as possible. If a repair will visibly change the piece, we'll walk you through it before doing anything irreversible.

Do you resize rings?

Yes, resizing starts at $150 and takes about 2 weeks. If you bought your ring from us and it's over $2,000, resizing is on the house.

Shipping

Where do you ship?

All over the US (free US return shipping, by the way) and most international destinations. We can't ship to Brazil, France, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Portugal, or Switzerland due to fine jewelry import restrictions. Some other countries have value-based restrictions, so check your local rules if in doubt.

How long does shipping take?

Depends on the piece:

  • Made-to-order and lab-grown pieces: up to 6–8 weeks for production + shipping.
  • Estate and in-stock pieces: ship within 2 weeks.
  • Most orders: UPS Ground or 2-Day.
  • Orders over $2,500: UPS Next Day Air.
Are duties and taxes included?

International duties and taxes are calculated and added at checkout, so there are no surprise bills at delivery.

I need my order by a specific date. Help?

Add a note at checkout. If your needed-by date is within 30 days, email hello@muretaandco.com or message WhatsApp at wa.me/14159617867 before placing your order so we can confirm we can hit it.

Returns & exchanges

What is your return policy?

Returns within 10 days of delivery, exchanges within 30 days. Pieces must come back in original condition with all packaging and any included upgrade or bonus items. US return shipping is free. Custom pieces are final sale. Full details on our Returns & Exchanges page.

How long do refunds take?

Refunds post 5–7 business days after we receive and inspect your return. Heads up: we don't process returns on weekends or Mondays, so Friday–Monday arrivals get processed Tuesday.

How do I start a return?

Through your account at account.muretaandco.com, or email hello@muretaandco.com. We'll send you a prepaid label.

I need to change my order!

Message us ASAP at hello@muretaandco.com or on WhatsApp at wa.me/14159617867 — the sooner you reach out, the more flexibility we have, especially on made-to-order or custom pieces.

Made-to-order

What does "Made to Order" mean?

We don't make these pieces until you order one. Each is hand-finished by our jewelers using the exact design and specs from our catalog. They take up to 8 weeks to arrive. Made-to-order is fixed-design only. If you want changes, you'll want our custom (bespoke) process instead.

Can I tweak a Made to Order piece?

Yes, just reach out to us and we can make customizations to any of our designs. We can’t guarantee the price will be the same, depending on what you’d like to change.

Upgrades & bonus items

Do all orders come with an upgrade?

No — upgrades only happen during our designated Upgrade Sales. We announce them ahead of time on social and via email.

What kind of upgrade will I get?
  • Orders under $1,000: a mystery silver piece chosen by our team. Can't be selected or swapped.
  • Orders over $1,000: a premium piece worth 10–200% of your order's retail value, averaging around 25%. We pick based on your style and what you've bought before — we won't send you a third pair of stud earrings you already own.
What kinds of items are used as upgrades?

Almost always jewelry — usually estate pieces, occasionally designer — and at least silver in quality. When we can, we'll preview upgrades on social.

What if my upgrade item is missing from my order?

Email us. We keep detailed records, and we'll get it to you within two weeks. We're a small team and mistakes happen, but we always make it right.

Can I return or exchange my upgrade item?

If you return your main purchase, the upgrade has to come back with it in original condition. Otherwise, we'll deduct its retail value from your refund. If you keep the purchase but don't love the upgrade, you can request a replacement. Replacement requests are reviewed case-by-case.

Can I choose my upgrade item?

Usually no. It's a thoughtful surprise picked by our team. Occasionally, we'll let customers choose from a curated selection; we'll say so in advance when that's the case.

Orders & checkout

I don't see the note I made during checkout.

Checkout notes are only visible on our end, but rest assured they're sitting right there in your order.
